Adult Autism Evaluations

What is Autism?

Autism is a neuro-developmental condition. This refers to processes that occur during the development of the nervous system as early as the embryonic stage of life. Some autistic symptoms may not present themselves fully until the individual is faced with various social demands which they feel they are not equipped to deal with.
Autistic individuals generally experience difficulty communicating in social situations. This could impact their ability to form and maintain relationships with partners, friends, family, peers and colleagues.
They may display behaviours that are repetitive, such as moving their whole or parts of their bodies in a certain manner.
The range of interests or topics they are interested in may be limited.
Being over-responsive, or under-responsive, to touch, sounds, lights, smells etc. often occurs.

How is Autism diagnosed in adults?

This practice employs a Neuro-Affirmative approach to Autism. An Autism diagnosis is made through a collaborative evaluation process in which you will be viewed as the expert of your own life.

As part of the collaborative evaluation we may obtain additional input from a significant other. A parent, partner, sibling, or any other person that knows you well can complete questionnaires on your behalf or assist in the interview (if possible only).

Please Note: There may be instances where the standard evaluation process will not support all your needs, in these instances it is possible to tailor-make the evaluation to suite your needs. If you require an additional cognitive assessment, ADHD assessment, personality assessment or dementia screening this can be arranged and you will be provided with a quotation in advance.
For instance, cognitive assessments do not form part of the Autism evaluation (as indicated in the NICE guidelines) but a general cognitive screening or full cognitive assessment can be included if you have concerns about your memory and concentration.
